How to Safely Pack and Ship Glass Art?
Shipping 3D objects is usually much more challenging than shipping paintings, prints, and other 2D pieces. Shipping 3D objects made of glass is even a greater challenge. The truth is that, in most cases, you cannot control the entire process of shipping glass art and the actions of those involved in getting the artwork from point A to point B. However, there are still things that you can do to protect your art during transportation and ensure everything arrives at the destination in one piece. One of them is hiring experienced art shippers who know how to ship glass art safely and securely. Another important thing is the proper packing of your artwork, which includes five major steps. What are they?
How to Safely Pack and Ship Glass Art
1. Prepare the right box.
Make sure you choose the right box. It should be new, durable, and several inches larger than your artwork on all sides. Fill the bottom with some packing material so that your piece won’t shift through and down to the bottom of the box.
2. Wrap the artwork in bubble wrap.
To ship glass art safely, you need to carefully wrap the entire piece in bubble wrap. You may also need to apply artist tape to the surface of the artwork if it is too delicate. Secure everything with the tape.
3. Pack the item in the box.
Pack the artwork entirely wrapped in bubble wrap in your box and fill in all empty spaces with packing material so that the item won’t move during transportation. Seal the box with packing tape.
4. Consider custom crating.
Especially fragile glass pieces should be transported in custom-made wooden crates built according to the items’ dimensions and shipping requirements. The art crate should be reinforced with foam inside.
5. Label the box.
Once everything is done, mark the box or crate with special shipping labels like “Fragile” and “This Side Up.”
